January, 1st 2013, “Meta Machine” Live

Meta Machine GearWe welcome Meta Machine, for a live in studio set, a new project by long time friends and “1066 Granville” space founders. 1066, a cornerstone of Vancouver’s improv, free jazz and proto-noise scene, was a long time surviver of Vancouver’s crack down on rave and after hours venues, it predates the “Granville Entertainment District” “revitalization” along with the Sugar Refinery space in the 90s and early naughts. 1066 Granville eluded our No-Fun Citys finest by eschewing “canned” music, and thus providing much need space for live music at that time. Both of these venue opened space for experimentation and development of Vancouver’s music outfits, most notability “The Beans” (rip) who famously performed for 24hours continuously at the Sugar Refinery cycling through a key per hour… But I digress.

This new 3 piece ensemble is laptop based (read Abelton Live), despite a profusion of disparate midi controllers, new and vintage analog gear (Yamaha CS10, Volca Synth, x0xb0x box) and serious live chops (sitar,  jazz drums and turntablism). Questioned in the interview they describe the use of Abelton/Latops as allowing them to come together. The laptop is the common ground.

Listen for the set and interview. It should also be mention they indulged their experimental roots, dropping to 43bmp in honour to our shows mandate when you next encounter them they maybe nearer the dance floor that this set wanders.

Track Listing to follow.
