Other than the odd copy of one of Fannan Mohamed‘s 7″s for sale on eBay or Groove Collector, there is precious little information about this musician around. Even less about Bahjaphone, the French imprint which released this EP. Upbeat, well-recorded raï leaning towards Arabic folk from late 1960s Morocco (?), it is a shame he isn’t better known -though with the recent glut of interest in North African music (both modern and traditional (usually a hybrid of each)), that anonymity may not last. No electric guitars or synthesizers to be heard here, as became prolific 5 to 10 years later in raï music, but slicker production and more elaborate instrumentation than most of its contemporaries.
